| Wild Bill Devine Interview Page 2 |
MM.com: How durable have you found your Mustangs to be since you started drag racing (EX: How often do you fix or repair it?)
Bill: It is a lot of work. Its funny...the old car going 7teens didn't take muck work. And its not the car, its the level of competition. It has taken every spare moment of time I have!
MM.com: Adding to that, how much do you usually spend during each race weekend?
Bill: With repairs and maintenance, it costs $2000.00 to $2500.00.
MM.com: What happened to the Mustang you raced for all those years? Did you sell it?
Bill: Yes, I sold it and someone decided it needed to be redone. It was cut up almost to the point of starting over. I believe the car was destroyed. Had I known, I would have not sold it
MM.com: Can you give us a feeling for what it's like going 1320 ft. in just under 7 seconds in the new purple pony (sounds a bit too odd)? Bill: No different than the old car. The old car had a shorter wheel base. This car is a bit faster.
MM.com: Before the recent outburst of 13 entries at Maple Grove, the NMRA saw major drops in Pro 5.0 cars at the end of last year moving on into this year. Do you believe Pro 5.0 will die out anytime soon?
Bill: No. Actually, the rules look very good this year and every NMRA race has had a good turnout. You must consider 2 things: the location of the track and the time of year (weather related).
MM.com: Are you going to enter more or less NMRA events next year? Are you willing to push extra hard to try for a championship next year?
Bill: I have gone to everyone except Michigan so far (due to parts shortage), and am running the full program. As far as the points, I need to figure out my own stuff. Thats a challenge alone this year.
MM.com: Now, getting to a little more personal side for a bit...How long have you been married to your wife Cheryl?
Bill: 23 years.
MM.com: Why did you choose to not have kids?
Bill: I have a 120lb doberman!
MM.com: I remember you used to work at Down's Ford. Since moving to Florida, what do you do for a living now?
Bill: I work for a company called Pro Power Performance Parts. I'm a sales consultant. Our mainstay is wholesale to engine builders around the country.
MM.com: Why did you decide to move to Florida in the first place?
Bill: I hate the snow!
MM.com: Time to do some reflecting now. What do you believe is your biggest accomplishment in drag racing?
Bill: Getting a 5.0 302 block in the sixes.
MM.com: Has drag racing ever become the least bit boring over the years?
Bill: No! Never! Even if I'm just there watching.
MM.com: Another reflection in Wildman history (???), who do you believe has contributed the most to your drag racing career?
Bill: My wife Cheryl.
MM.com: Alright...now lets look into the future. What plans do you have for the future?
Bill: The way the economy, the industry and rules go? Who the hell knows. If I had a decent sponsor it would help things alot!
MM.com: This is always an odd question to ask, but its fun to hear what people have to say...What do you think of our site?
Bill: You need to liven it up a bit, ie: need some action. It is full, all good info, and is well done.
MM.com: Finally, is there any special thanks you would like to give out?
Bill: Yes, my crew: Cheryl, Steve, Tom, Tony, and Dave. Crawford Racing Engines, Propower, Manley, CP Pistons, Racecraft, Liberty's gears, Downs ford, Joe Amato, Ricky from downs ford, Redline Racing Oils, Billy and lon from 2nd Street Speed, Charlie and Fred Bauer from C&F Race Cars, John Hauf and Ed Rice!
