Just days after announcing that he has filed a lawsuit against the company he founded, Saleen Inc, Steve Saleen dropped a bombshell on us with the release of a few new pictures of the awesome 2010 SMS Mustang! As we reported in April the 2010 SMS 460 Mustang will feature a 470 horsepower and 427 ft/lb of torque 4.6L V8. For those looking for a bigger leap in power there is the 460X which features an SMS massage 655 horsepower 5.0L V8 complete with a set of forged internals and CNC'd cylinder heads that any gearhead would drool over. Both vehicles will be fitted with the SMS 296 Supercharger System. All the power in the world isn't going to get these bad boys going without some type of transmission and for that Saleen decided to offer a few options. The 460 version will be availble with your choice of the standard Mustang GT's five speed automatic, or Tremec TR3650 five speed manual. Thats all fine and well but SMS realized that with the 460X's additional 185 horsepower customers would want more and for that they chose to include the SMST 6 speed manual. As with most cars of this power level no automatic is available.
Both vehicles will feature the SMS Supercars Signature Series S4 suspension system. The S4 system consists of a Watts Link style setup and will include SMS spec shocks and struts, front and rear swaybars with high durometer pivot bushings, and specific rate springs. Tying it all together will be a stainless steel strut tower brace.
Lets face it, a Saleen SMS wouldn't be an Saleen SMS without an awesome body kit and as usual Steve Saleen came through with flying colors. The 2010 SMS Mustang features an all new body kit consisting of an "aero style" front grill, integrated front splitter, high downforce rear wing, rear facia with exhaust cooling vents, and side skirts. While the 460 will feature Red Butterfly dual side induction hood with direct air injection, the 460X a Red Butterfly center ram air induction hood much like that shown on the SMS 25th Anniversary Edition Concept Mustang.
Finally we've got prices on these beasts! The 460 will go for $64,990.00 with a convertible version being available $69,990. To get your hands the 460X you'll need even deeper pockets with its MSRP of $85,961.00 for the coupe and $90,961 for the drop top. As with many of Steve Saleen's previous creations the 2010 SMS Mustangs will have numerous options including standard stuff like a glass roof, Shaker 1000 stereo system, and navigation system. For those who want something even more unique there are much more expensive options like an $18,000 "Custom Show Car Paint".
Expect both of these sick ponies to hit dealer lots later this year!
