| 2011 Ford Mustang GT Gets 412hp 5.0L V8 |
Updated 12/18/2009: Yesterday morning Ford Motor Company disclosed the details of the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT to industry media. That information was meant to be embargoed until December 28th when Ford planned to officially announce the new steed to the world. Unfortunately they never expected somebody with loose lips to drop a few of the details on Facebook and the rest, as they say, is history. Within hours various media outlets such as Edmunds and Autoweek, which had earlier gotten the information from Ford, decided not to be outshined by the embargo breaker, giving us confirmation and even more details.
Earlier all we knew was what Edmunds would divulge, which was that the 2011 Mustang GT would indeed be getting a 5.0L V8 with 412hp. However not long after, Autoweek one-upped Edmunds by revealing further details including that the new 5.0L engine produces 390 ft/lbs of torque thanks to its dual overhead cam (DOHC), four valve per cylinder design. All new aluminum heads featuring twin independent variable valve timing sit on top of an all new aluminum cylinder block with cast iron sleeves. They went on to confirm that it will also feature tuned exhaust headers which eliminate the need for aftermarket headers and allow the engine to breath better. Inside the engine is a forged steel full counterweight crankshaft and four bolt main bearings with high performance pistons and connecting rods. Peak horsepower is reached at 6,500 rpm. Like it's V6 sibling the GT will be availble with either a six speed automatic (6R80) or six speed manual (MT82) transmission.
Originally it was presumed that the V8 version of the 2011 Ford Mustang would be unveiled alongside the V6 at the LA Auto Show earlier this month. Enthusiasts were distressed to find that Ford chose not to reveal the GT but apparently was holding it back, possibly for the North American International Auto Show held in Detroit in January. Some Mustang loyalists were even fearing that with its new found power, the V6 replaced the V8 altogether. Gladly we can now confirm that isn't the case. Indeed Ford withheld the GT from our grasps to debut it in Detroit. Be sure to check back here after the embargo expires (December 28th) for the full scoop on the 2011 Ford Mustang GT!
