2004 Mustang GT-R Concept To Cross Chopping Block

Mustang GT-R Concept To Cross Chopping Block

Less than 24 hours of reporting that a very rare'65 Shelby GT350 would go up for auction during the Pebble Beach Concours we get word that another rare pony will also be crossing the chopping block at the same event, the Mustang GT-R concept car.

The Mustang GT-R concept made its official debut at the 2004 New York Auto Show. According to Ford it was built as a tribute to 40 years of Mustang performance and to signal the possibility of a future Mustang race car. (which would later become the FR500) The Mustang GT-R concept featured a 440 horsepower "Cammer" 5.0L V8 crate engine backed by a T-56 six speed transmission and was painted a blindingly bright Valencia Orange. Now thanks to what is touted as the worlds largest collector car auction house, RM Auctions, Mustang enthusiasts actually have a chance to buy it. During RM's annual Sports and Classics of Monterey sale on August 12th they will hold a special evening auction devoted exclusively to "The company that put the world on wheels", Ford Motor Company. Featuring over a century of automotive design and innovation, this special sale presents some 57 Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns, including 18 concept vehicles. All proceeds will go to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and The Children's Center in Michigan. Although its anyone's guess what the final sale price will be for the GT-R, RM is estimating it will sell for $250,000 to $350,000.

"Concept cars serve as the auto industry's vision into the future, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase these vehicles at RM's Sports and Classics of Monterey", says Edsel B. Ford II, Board Director, Ford Motor Company. "It is our hope that the funds raised through this effort bring us closer to our vision of a day when there is a cure for diabetes, and a safer and brighter future for all of our youth."

"RM Auctions is honored to have been chosen to present the selection of Ford Motor Company concept vehicles as part of this year's Sports and Classics of Monterey event", says Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer, RM Auctions. "Continuing RM's long-standing relationship with Ford, this unique segment, featuring 18 concepts in total, not only provides a great opportunity for the savvy collector, but illustrates both RM and Ford's ongoing commitment to supporting today's youth,"
