5.0L Mustang Engine To Get Direct Injection?

2011 Mustang 5.0L Direct Injection?

When the 2011 Mustang GT was introduced late last year Mustang enthusiasts all across the country marveled at its all new 5.0L engine and the astounding 412 horsepower it creates while still getting 26 mpg. Its great isn't it? But what if we were to tell you that it could just as easily have had 440 horsepower while stilling getting the same fuel mileage or better? Well thats what the guys over at TheTruthAboutCars.com (TTAC) are saying could have been and will likely happen in the coming years. You see, at the NY Auto Show in January, Sajeev Mehta of TTAC took the 5.0L cylinder head cutaway photo you see above. The little dimple highlighted in red, TTAC says, is proof that the 5.0L engine will get direct injection in the near future. Although there is no way of telling for sure, its possible that Ford cast the cylinder head with provisions that would allow it to install a direct injection system in the vehicle when it deems necessary. That could be just to bump sales in the coming years, or to meet stricter emissions laws. Either way it means that Ford has a trick up its sleeve that will benefit the Mustang, sooner or later.

For those who aren't aware, direct injection is a not so new technology that many auto manufacturers are using these days that, compared to port fuel injection, bumps power, lowers emissions, and give better fuel economy. If you'd like to read more about the technology check out the Wikipedia article on the subject.
