Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

Not certain but I doubt that would trigger that code.

Ok one more question if my TPS Aand the idle screw and IAC is out of adjustment would that be a possible cause for the obd 1 code 172 to keep on coming up on my cel?

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

I think the threaded screw has a nut on it. If you loosen that nut you can turn the threaded piece with a pair of pliers and then lock that nut back down when you get it set.

As for the other part, what they mean is to blip/goose the throttle open real quickly, let it settle back down to idle, and see where the idle is at.

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

well 94 cobra at least on mine has no stop screw on the throtle side its just a threaded screw so how would you adjust that sucker? and also one of the steps says to snap open the throtle while the car is running im suppose to open it all the way up and see how it runs? or does it mean something else kind of confused on that part of the test, any ideas?

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

That's the idle air bleed screw. I've never had to mess with mine but you read how to properly set it here: http://www.ehow.com/i/#article_6802878

1. Loosen the jam nut on the throttle stop screw located on the passenger side of the throttle body. The throttle stop screw on the Mustang is not adjustable from the factory. If the non-adjustable screw has been replaced with an adjustable screw, it is necessary to reset the throttle stop.

2.*Insert a .010-inch feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and the throttle lever. Tighten the screw, using a small screwdriver, until it just contacts the feeler gauge. Remove the feeler gauge, turn the screw an additional 1 1/2 turns and tighten the jam nut to hold it in place.

3.*Disconnect the idle air control valve, located on the driver-side of the throttle body, by unplugging the electrical connector. Start the engine and allow it to run for two minutes. It may be necessary to hold the throttle open slightly to keep it running during this time.

4.*Turn the idle air bleed screw, located on the throttle body near the idle air control valve, using a small screwdriver until the engine idles at 675 revolutions per minute, or RPM. Snap open the throttle body and readjust the idle air bleed screw if necessary.

5.*Turn the engine off and plug the electrical connector back into the idle air control valve. Replace the black rubber plug on the idle air bleed screw. Test drive the Mustang to verify the surging and stalling problems are fixed.

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

Ok so I think I finally found the issue I end up replacing a vacum regulator in the right fender and its running soo much better still not 100% but getting closer and the check engine light hasnt come on yet so we'll see, would you know how to correctly adjust the small screw on the throtle body right next to the IAC sensor not the idle stop screw but the one in the throtle body under a small rubber seal that can be taken off I accidently messed with it and now I think its not in the right position, like I said its right next to the IAC to the left of the sensor on top of the throtle body once that is taken care of I should be burning tires again on it

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

The factory setting is .052 to .056 but I've known quite a few guys who run it around .035 Honestly I doubt you would notice a difference either way. I think the only time its really needed to goto a smaller plug gap is with a power adder like nitrous.

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

will definetly clean the maf this weekend, this might be a crazy question but a guy in a shop told me to set my gap for sparks at .034 now when I checked the standard for 94 ford mustang cobra its at .054 would that make my car run like crap? what is the gap space mainly for does it make any difference at what its set?

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

I really don't think it's ignition related. That trouble code indicates a lean condition which is probably either a fuel problem or a vacuum leak. It could also be the maf reading incorrectly which is why I recommend cleaning it.

Re: 94 mustang cobra code 172

No they are brand new caps you can tell for sure that they are now if I perform a engine vacum test would that indicate a leak anywhere on the engine? I know that mustangs are suppose to be at like 20 pounds of vacum.... everytime I accelarate the car shakes like its not running on all 8 cylinders this one got me confused because I replaced the distributor cap and rotor plug wires sparks so what else is left on the ignition side when its cold it takes some time to start it cranks nice and smooth just doesnt start as fast as I think it should be Im talking about like 4-6sec of cranking any ideas if this is connected also to the shaking of the engine on low rpms even when its at idle it shakes, timing is set at 12* are there any more parts to ignition that control the amount of spark at accelaration? thanks for all your suggestions I wont give up on the car since it is a original owner car and I love it so wont give it up because of some small problems i know its fixible
