Technical discussion of the beloved 5.0L Mustang

trans for my rustang

Postby JONFORD481 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 2:07 pm

hey guys im new to the site and figured id start off with an issue that has been bugging me for quite a while

i have an 89 gt thats mostly bone stock with boltons.. an intake, b-303 cam, 4.10s, etc.. my issue has been my transmission.. it has a world clasic T5 in it now. and 2 years of abuse/board shifting has put a beating on my syncro-rings.. i plan on rebuilding this trans myself as a backup.. but i want something that can hold a lot of power. i plan on boosting/ spraying this stock 5.0 because i have 351 that im building on the side.. what im looking for is a trans that can hold up to that abuse... ive been looking on summit racing and found two different cobra R 5 speeds for 2,200 a peice.. just wondered if there was any better transmission out there for around 3,000 that was any better for drag racing

I think the Cobra R transmissions you're referring to are Tremec TKO 600's. Those handle 600hp and 600 ft/lbs of torque so it'll be more than enough unless you're building an all out drag car.

Hmm.. well I suppose I was kinda looking for something more built for drag racing. I've herd that strait cut gears and "dog ring / dog box" is much better for board shifting. I do plan on turning this in a 90% drag 10% street car within the next 2 years, so "streetability" isn't really one of my concerns.. have you herd anything about that being true?

The T5 is a pretty stout piece. If the one in your car came with it, then that's 20+ years of abuse.........

A tranny with straight cut gears would definitely be more durable but also a lot louder too. The reverse gear in the T5 is straight cut so it'll give you an idea how loud it'll be. Just realize that the higher the rpm the louder they whine. However if streetability isn't a concern then you may be better off going with something like that.

G-Force sells kits to retrofit your T5 to a straight cut tranny, it might be something to look into. Otherwise Richmond sells a few transmissions that have straight cut gears, though I don't know much about them.

What kind of power are you looking to build? For me personally I would probably just go with the TKO because I figure that once I build enough power that the TKO no longer holds up the car is probably quick enough that an automatic would be a better choice anyway.

oh i know how loud and annoying the strait cut gears can be.. i have a buddy who has them in his chevy, and he wants to cry every time he drives it.
anyway. ive looked into a gforce T5 with strait cut gears and dog rings, and seen many videos on youtube of cars making crazy amounts of power racing them. i just cant find a price on them.. I dont belive ive herd of this kit to turn a stock t5 into a strait gut gear set. do you have any links?

I think you have to call them for pricing. http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp
