John Gullett Tribute

John Gullett, the first man to break the 200 MPH barrier, is one of the best Pro 5.0 drivers. He hasn't beaten Joe DaSilva, but he only had one chance. That is one race I want to really see now. John Gullett once had a record battle with Joe (Joe DaSilva). It seemed as if it would never end. Well, after the NMRA 2000 season, that was it. The NMRA changed some of the wieght rules and Joe didn't want to have other cars lighter than his turbo car. Now Joe can be in the Fun Ford events. So, we still have a chance of seeing that race. John (John Gullett) would bet Joe's record than Joe would bet John's record. At the end of the 2000 NMRA season John at the end, won the record battle with a 7.315.

John went on in the next season and wasn't in the first NMRA event. He showed up at the first Fun Ford event. Chuck Samuel the first man to break John Gullett's record, was there also. John broke the Fun Ford record. The record was 7.077. In the next qualifying round did the same thing as the last round, broke the Fun Ford record. John ran a 7.049 in that round. Chuck Samuel in the same round ran a 7.127. In round 2 John ran a 7.096, but in the next round he broke. Chuck Samuel went on to win the race with a 7.405.

At the second NMRA event, John Gullet and Chuck Samuel were both there
, again. A new guy to NMRA Pro 5.0, Derrick Smith, was there. In qualifying there was only one man that made it in the 7 second zone. Well a surprise, Derrick Smith had a 7.4 second run. Derrick Smith also had the quickest time of the weekend, a 7.279. On the other hand, John Gullett had to go head to head against the quickest guy of the night, Derrick Smith. John happened to win against Derrick. John was happy that night.

At the second Fun Ford Weekend event, John and Chuck were there. Derrick Smith wasn't. Neither was Joe DaSilva. The drivers that were there were: Doug Mangrum, John Gullet, Chuck Samuel, Brit Floyd, Jim Heavner, and Jason Fields. Well, what a surprise in the race. Won of the three men that haven't been racing the whole year, broke the Fun Ford record and the 6 second barrier. Doug ran a 6.980. John wasn't going to give up. John followed Doug with a 7.009. What was going happen next. Well the quickest time in round 1 was Doug Mangrum with a 7.021. Chuck Samuel broke the speed record with a 200.92. In round 2 Chuck broke the speed record again with a 203.65 with a 7.1. Chuck didn't win, but Doug won the race. John failed to bet Chuck in the second round. Well even though John had both records for a little bit and then people broke the records, and John Gullett doesn't have any records now, if averaged all his times are probably the quickest averaged times.
