|2013-2014 Shelby GT500 Mustang To Have 620 Horsepower?
It has been long standing rumor that the Ford Mustang would receive a complete redesign around 2014. However the only thing anyone could tell us was that it would likely be a smaller vehicle with a more modern style. Until today that is. Car and Driver published an article this morning detailing what their "well informed sources" tell them about 2013 Shelby GT500 Mustang and its monster powerplant.
According to the article Ford is indeed planning to redesign the 2013-2014 Mustang to look "somewhat less retro and more modern and edgy", possibly with LED lighting all around. OK, so we already knew that, but what is really interesting is what will power the car, namely a supercharged 5.8L V8. Word is that Ford wants to counter Chevy's upcoming 550hp Camaro ZL1, which is said to begin production in early 2012, by boring out the 5.4L that currently resides underhood to 5.8L (351ci). Of course the new displacement will add a few ponies but what will really wake this engine up is the new supercharger that will be bolted to it. Supposedly Ford will replace the GT500's 1.8L Eaton M112 supercharger in favor of a much more powerful 2.3L Eaton TVS unit which, very interestingly, is the same one used on the ZL1 Camaro. The proposed output? An amazing 620 horsepower which C&D says will be "a straight up bitch to launch consistently". Considering the new Boss has a launch control system we'd expect to see the same in the next gen GT500 as well, especially with this much power.
While Ford is keeping quiet about the 2013 Shelby GT500, C&D says it'll likely go on sale in late 2012. That means we'll probably, no make that hopefully, start seeing the first glimpses of the car early next year! While that all sounds good we're pretty sad to report that pricing is expected to reach the $60,000 zone.
