87 gt timing?

do i set the base timing at 10 BTDC?

cmrokllr1 05-30-2005 02:59 PM

Most people set the timing on 5.0's to about 14 degrees.

Like mark said the normal timing is around 14° but since every car and setup is different you need to do a little trial and error. Start with the timing at 14° and drive the car around. If it pings (a sound of rocks shaking in a coffee can) then turn it down a degree or two. If you dont hear pinging then you can try going up a degree or two. For the most part you want it as high as can go without pinging. Some guys set theirs as high as 16°, and 10° is what its set at from the factory.

thanks ill try that

Remember that if you are running a higher than stock timing you will more than likely need a higher octane fuel. Also usually during cooler weather you can run a lower octane fuel, but during the summer 91+ octane is needed with the timing bumped up.
BTW... a friend of mine ran his at 18 degrees without pinging in cooler weather, and without the A/C on. He eventually put it down to 14 to be on the safe side though.

OT: Jim are you just copying and pasting that degree symbol from somewhere or is there some trick to typing that in?

Sorry Mike I just read your post. To get the ° symbol hold down "alt" and type 248 on your numeric key pad, then let go of alt and it should show up.

I just wanted to see if that worked?

Mike23386 12-01-2006 03:58 PM

I set the timing to 10BTDC and it runs pretty bad but I also put a supercharger on it too so what should I set my timing to for the supercharger and 93 octane pump gas? There is no knocking or pinging it just has a studder and intake backfire like 88FOXLX has that I thought I got rid of when I changed my fuel pump but now its back.

mike, you need to bump your timing up, 10 degrees is not enough with 93 octane and a supercharger. no matter weather its an auto or manual, set it to 14 and go from there. if its a manual you should have no trouble going to 16, if its an auto you'll just have to see for your self. hope this helps

Does it take awhile for the timing to kind of kick in because I adjusted both ways. I went down to 8 because somebody told me 8 with a supercharger and that wasnt working so I went up to 14 because everyone goes up to 14 but that didnt help. I took the little plug out and set the timing then put it back in and road tested it.
