Have you changed anything before it started using so much gas?

Thats strange. I'd suggest trying to check for computer codes. I would think that the check engine light would be on if something was that off, but who knows for sure.

BTW Try changing gas stations. I've heard speculation that certain places "water" down their gas with certain things. Even if that isn't the case it could be just a source of really bad gas.

I'm not certain, but if it were the EGR valve staying open the check engine light should be on.

I've done similar things with K&N filters on ATVs but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a car. You should be able to find K&N oil at your local parts store or if not any atv/motorcycle dealer will have it.

If your egr was stuck open your car would barely idle and would die out when you rev the gas. With a stock cam in my car it was idling like it had an x-303 cam when my egr went bad. Try o2 sensors or coolant temp sensor.
