new to mustangs

First I am not some kid, I am almost 40 years old and have been around many cars with a wrench. I have never owned a mustang, I have owned many fieros(12) and corvettes(3) and a porsche and a camaro.

My sons (12 yrs old and 7 yrs old) want our next project car to be a mustang, make that a classic mustang. Our last one was a fiero with an engine swap. One of the things I have learned from my last project is that these forums are great.

I am looking to find out is what should I look for with a first gen mustang. Where do they rot, what are their quirks etc. Mostly interested in convertible info. What are popular engine swpas or upgrades. Who does engine swaps, 5.0 etc. Any good sites for more info or aftermarket/replacement parts?

thanks for the many anticipated replies.

Re: new to mustangs

Sadly I've never owned a classic Mustang so I can't say much about what their quirks are but the most common engines people run in these are the 289 or 302. The 289 is obviously the classic approach and is usually run with a carb setup. On the other hand if you want something a little more modern then a fairly common modification is to convert the car to a 87-93 5.0L engine, with fuel injection and all. The nice thing about a setup like that is that you keep the classic look of the car but get the driveability of a modern vehicle. The downside is that its a pretty complicated swap, but the bonus is that those cars seem to draw a lot of lookers at car shows.

Good luck on your project and keep us updated.
