I know this is a mustang forum but..

it's still a Ford problem. My grandad recently inherited a '64 Ford Galaxie 500 with a 390. He also got another car, so he gave me the Galaxie, I guess I'm gonna give him the van back lol. But anyway, when we start it, sometimes it starts up, no prob, but sometimes acts funny. It has a Holly 750cfm carb, and it'll get flooded out. Sometimes, when it finally cranks it backfires through the carb and lights the carb of fire. I know that can't be good for it. What could cause it to be doing that? Could it be the timing? Is it firing too soon? And, being only 15, I don't know how to change the timing, sadly my grandad doesn't wanna work on it. Being 58 that really isn't a big problem, he could be much worse.

Why is it sometimes it does and sometimes it don't?

Its really hard to say. Could just need a tune up, maybe the timing is wrong, and possibly something wrong with the carb.
