Is it better to have Raw HP or a Supercharger to get the desired HP you're looking for? For instance, would it be better to get an engined tuned to produce 400HP or get an engine tuned for 325-350 HP and put a Supercharger on it to bring the HP up to 400?

Well just about everyone you speak to will tell you something else. The cheapest solution is going with a nitrous kit. With a 300hp car and a 100 shot of nitrous you will hit your target power easily and very cheaply.

There really is no "best" solution to making hp, its really a matter of personal preference. Nitrous if great for making cheap horsepower but the downside is you need to refill the bottle all of the time. At $40 a bottle you wind up spending alot of money on that stuff over the years, but the initial investment is quite cheap.
Superchargers and Turbo setups are really nice, but are much more expensive. The great thing about this type of setup is that although the initial cost is high you have power on tap. No bottle filling.
The third solution would be good ol' horsepower. (aka "naturally aspirated") Many people like this type of setup because its "simple", meaning there are no blower/turbo tubes, intercoolers, extra belts, etc. Problem with type of setup is that you need to run a pretty radical tune to get the hp you want. Things such as larger heads, cams, etc are great for the track, or an occasional street/strip car, but not for an everyday driver. Big cams suck down the fuel quick!
My personal preference is the supercharger route. Turbo's make great horsepower but cost a bit more and are much more complicated in the install process. Although you need to drop $3000-$4000 on the initial cost a supercharger will make big horsepower, and wont kill you in gas costs when driving on the highway if you get a centrifugal model. Dont get me wrong, any real horsepower increase will use more fuel, but a centrifugal supercharger doesnt spin very fast at lower rpms (highway cruising) so you save wear and tear on the car, and the wallet LOL

I think Jim pretty much hit it on the head. Not much for me to add, other than that it is a matter of preference. Some guys love NA power, some guys love turbos, some love nitrous, and some love superchargers. You really need to decide what you are into and go with that.

Thanx for the replies. You've provided good info to my question, but I guess I need to clarify a little more. I'm a Ford man, but I'll use Chevy for my question . My Uncle has a 2002 Z06 with 405HP and the new Z06 will have 500HP. These engines are tuned well, so you get 20+ miles per gallon, so they're not gas hogs like the engines of old or engines that have been boarded out too much. So here's my question, if I were to buy an old Chevy and drop one of the new engines in it, would it be better to buy the old Z06 engine with 405HP and put a Supercharger on it to get 500HP or would it be better to just buy the new Z06 engine that already has 500HP? I know one way may be less expensive, but say money wasn't a factor, which scenario would be the better choice? Thanx in advance.

The new chassis would probably be tuned much better, so i'd say that would be your best bet. Otherwise if you didnt care about handling the new car would still probably be better because that car is making the 500hp stock so if in the future you want even MORE power you could put a supercharger on that and have 650hp!!!!

A centrifugal supercharger only makes boost when the engine is at a certain rpm, while a "roots" style supercharger makes boost just off idle.
So a roots type makes power faster, but will usually make some boost even at cruising speeds using more fuel. Thats not to say they will suck down the fuel though as the '03-up cobra has a roots supercharger.

That depends on your opinion. Some people like it one way, others like the other way.
For a very long time centrifugal superchargers were "all the rage". There were roots type superchargers available and some people did buy them, but it seems as most people bought the centrifugal type more often.
Now it seems like for the last few years ever since the '03 Cobra came out everyone wants a roots supercharger. The Roush, Saleen, and Shelby Cobra GT500 now all come with roots type superchargers.

Personally, i don't really have a preference one way or the other.
