i have a 1991 mustang and the outside driver side door handle does not open the door but i can open for the inside. is there a clip or something in the door that could have broke?

I'm trying to picture what it looks like. I believe there is a rod that goes to the door handle that actuates the latch and I think there is a small white clip that holds the rod in place. More than likely that clip broke off.
